Pumpkin Carving Tricks & Tips

🎃 Make Pumpkin Carving a Treat with These Tips

There’s just something about a glowing jack-o’-lantern on the porch that makes it really feel like fall. Whether you go for a classic toothy grin, a cute design, or something totally unique, carving pumpkins is one of those traditions that never gets old.

The only problem? Once you carve them, they can start to wilt, mold, or get nibbled on way sooner than you’d like. Luckily, with a little prep and a few simple tricks, you can help your pumpkins last longer and make your display look amazing.

Below are some of my favorite tips, plus a few new ones I’m planning to try this year, for carving, preserving, and showing off pumpkins this season. 🎃🍂

Keeping Pumpkins Fresh & Critter-Free

Keeping your pumpkins looking good and safe from hungry squirrels means you can enjoy them longer and get more out of your display. Here are a few ways to enjoy them longer:

  • Clean & prep: Scrape the inside well to remove excess moisture—it helps pumpkins last longer.
  • Light disinfecting: A quick spray with a bleach solution keeps mold from starting too soon.
  • Seal the edges: Rubbing petroleum jelly on carved areas slows shriveling. (This is one I'm going to try this year.)
  • Vinegar spray: A daily spritz helps prevent mold.
  • Revive if needed: If a pumpkin starts to wilt, soaking it in cold water can plump it back up. (Also never knew this.)
  • Keep critters away: Sprinkle cayenne pepper or use a clear protective spray to discourage squirrels and other critters.

Carving, Lighting & Display Ideas

Carving pumpkins should be fun, and the way you light and display them can make all the difference. Here's a few ideas!

  • Sketch it out: Use a washable marker or poke small holes to outline your design before carving, it keeps things simple.
  • Cookie cutters: Great for easy, cute shapes like stars, hearts, or simple faces. (Trying this for sure!)
  • Lighting: Battery-operated candles or LEDs are safer than real flames, and timers or color-changing lights add a little extra magic. Also they often have a remote or a timer you can set!

Even just a few well-placed pumpkins can make a porch feel instantly festive! Happy Pumpkin season!
